How it Works

Bringing this service to your location is similar to putting in a payphone.  There is no need for a deep understanding about how it works or be responsible for its operation, costs, or revenues.  High-speed, wireless, Internet "hot-spots" are simply a non-intrusive, easy to use, convenient, communications technology available all around the world at reasonable prices.

YachtSpots members connect to the Internet via an 802.11b wireless transmission.  Depending on the site, a number of Access Points (AP) are installed at the marina.  These APs have small antennas that transmit and receive the data.  The typical setup involves one AP installed inside the main office/shop area, for local wireless and wired access, and another with a higher gain antenna installed outside for your residents and passers by.

The only piece of equipment that a user needs is a small, standard wireless Network Interface Card (NIC).  Many notebook computers come equipped with this feature and will have a typical range of about 300-500ft.  Performance enhancing equipment, such as external antennas and more powerful NICs are readily available and inexpensive.  These products can greatly increase the effective range of the signal.

YachtSpots's service is specifically designed for marinas. Our wireless solution makes it easy for you, your residents, customers and others to stay in touch, use email, send digital photos and download music all from the convenience of the boat or dock.
